Corporate description / mission:
BluCon Biotech GmbH is developing a process, which allows L-lactic acid to be produced for making the bioplastic PLA commercially competitive with fossil plastics. The BluCon process can use a broad variety of feedstock materials from agriculture, like grasses (straw, corn stover, bagasse, miscanthus, switchgrass, sorghum), wood type materials (poplar, spruce, cotton stalks), or from industrial processes (cellulosic waste from paper recycling or pulp&paper production, dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), beet pulp) to produce L-lactic acid, the building block for PLA.

Summary Products / Services / Technologies
Description of products:
L-Lactic acid is being used in the food industry, as a building block for solvents or PLA in the chemical industry and in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.

Poly lactic acid (PLA) is the most widely used biodegradable aliphatic polyester from renewable resources.

Both PLA and PLA-blends are produced in granulate form, and in various compositions. In plastics converters granulates are used to manufacture packaging (cups, bowls, foils and food storage containers), textiles (t-shirts and furniture textiles), hygiene products (nappies), foils for agriculture and cutlery.
